Orbital Operations: Station Assembly

Document ID: STAT-BLD-882. Building a ship is about motion. Building a station is about permanence. You drop an anchor in the absolute middle of nowhere and force people to live on it. We don't get the luxury of drydocks. We build in the dark.

The Anchor Mass

You need a center of gravity. You can't build a five-mile ring system without a central anchor point.

Sometimes we wrangle a stray nickel-iron asteroid into a stable Lagrange point. If the sector is empty, we tow in a super-dense mass core from the forge worlds. We lock the primary tethers directly to this core. If the anchor shifts during spin-up, the entire station tears itself to pieces.

The Core Cylinder

The spine comes next. This houses the reactor, the tightbeam arrays, and the heavy industry sectors.

We build it as a rigid tube. Zero gravity applies here. We weld the titanium bulkheads using automated crawler-rigs.

"Crawler three is jammed on the southern strut."

"Send a maintenance tech out."

"The tech says the strut is vibrating."

"Cut power to the local grid right now."

A vibrating strut means torsional stress. I lost a quarter of a cylinder once because we ignored a micro-vibration. The sheer forces sheared the bolts completely off.

The Habitation Rings

We construct the spokes outward from the core. Then we lay the ring segments.

Connecting the final segment is awful. The math says it will fit perfectly. Thermal expansion in the void means it never does. We use massive hydraulic presses to force the final joints together before the cold-weld sets. You hear the metal popping through the soles of your magnetic boots.

Spin-Up and Pressurization

We don't pump air until the rings are spinning. You need the centrifugal force to push the atmosphere outward and seal the micro-fractures against the polymer lining.

The whole structure groans under the new physical stress. Then the air hisses in. We wait twenty-four hours before we take our helmets off. We check the internal pressure gauges every ten minutes during that first day.

WARNING: Clear all temporary scaffolding before initiating the primary spin sequence. Stray beams will launch outward at escape velocity and punch straight through any support craft in the area.
