You have to feel the hull groaning through the control yoke. If you rely strictly on the readouts, you will drift straight into a dock pylon.
Pitch, yaw, and roll look clean on a simulator screen. Out here, thruster wash is dirty. The main exhaust cones bleed secondary radiation. When you execute a tight yaw in a dense formation, you risk frying the sensor arrays of the ship next to you.
"Watch your starboard wash."
"I have ten meters of clearance."
"You have five. The proximity alarm is lagging."
I ripped the yoke left and burned the port thrusters to overcompensate. The hull shuddered. We barely cleared the carrier's flight deck. You never trust the automatic spacing. The vacuum doesn't forgive bad math.
Punching a hole in spacetime requires perfect alignment. You spool the drive. The local gravity field distorts. The deck plates actually hum at a frequency that rattles your teeth. If your velocity vector shifts by even a fraction of a percent during the spool, the jump calculation fails.
"Spooling drive now."
"Hold vector. We have debris off the bow."
"I can't hold it. The field is collapsing."
If the field collapses unevenly, half the ship jumps. The other half stays behind. We call it the guillotine effect. You commit to the jump or you dump the core. There is no middle ground when you break physics.
Space combat is not a dogfight. It happens at extreme ranges and terrifying speeds. You don't chase the enemy. You calculate intercept vectors and let the targeting computers guess where they will be in ten seconds.
When you hit combat speed, the inertial dampeners struggle to keep up. Blood pools in the back of your skull. You breathe in short, sharp gasps. You grip the yoke until your knuckles turn white, waiting for the missile lock tone to break the static.
WARNING: Sustaining combat acceleration beyond twenty Gs for more than six minutes will cause irreversible retinal detachment. Don't push the dampeners past ninety percent.
